Below are some of the orthodontic services and products that AU Orthodontists Sydney is proud to offer and recommend to our valued Sydney clients. Dental Braces

Orthodontic braces are the first orthodontic treatment used by specialists to treat malocclusion. They are metal brackets attached to the teeth and secured by metal wires, designed to move and gradually position your teeth to correct their alignment. Because of its tried-and-tested durability and strength, AU Orthodontists Sydney recommends using braces for moderate to very complex teeth misalignment.

Improvement and upgrades on traditional orthodontic braces

As time passes, improvements on this orthodontic treatment have been made to address aesthetic and comfort issues that it poses. The rise of other forms of braces was also noted and was considered effective teeth straightening alternative treatment.

  • Metal braces, made of high-grade stainless steel, are the traditional forms of dental braces. Its metal brackets are glued to the front of the teeth and secured by metal wires that are gradually adjusted to move and straighten the teeth alignment. As the years’ pass, these gears became a bit smaller than its previous look so it looks a little bit more hidden and comfortable to wear. Because AU Orthodontists Sydney recognizes that braces have been tried and tested to correct malocclusion, metal braces are still the preferred choice of many as their orthodontic treatment.
  • Ceramic braces are also called white braces because, instead of using metal fixtures, ceramic gears are glued to the teeth, making it a bit more concealed and less obvious than the metal ones. This kind of dental braces answers the common complaint about metal braces being too noticeable and eye-catching. However, since they are made of clear ceramic and not durable steel, they are more delicate and may damage easily. AU Orthodontists Sydney advises its patients that extra care is needed when maintaining and cleaning your ceramic braces.
  • Lingual braces, on the other hand, are metal braces that are attached or glued to the back of the teeth, making it gain its name as ‘incognito’ or ‘concealed’ metal braces. Many are drawn to this type of dental braces because its metal gears are unseen anytime to smile and speak. However, because it is placed at the back of the teeth and very near the tongue, it may somehow affect your eating habits and speech more than the traditional metal braces. Allow AU Orthodontists Sydney educate you on how to use and care for your lingual braces by calling our clinic right away!

We, at AU Orthodontists Sydney, are happy to assist you and provide more information about which orthodontic treatment you prefer. Feel free to contact us anytime and we will gladly provide you with all the information you would need about dental braces.

Invisalign

The Invisalign System, developed by Align Technology, Inc., promises a ‘virtually invisible’ approach in teeth alignment. Using smooth and clear dental aligners to gradually manipulate and position your teeth correctly, it is the latest innovation in the field of orthodontics that can solve malocclusion, abnormal teeth spacing, and more! We are proud to say that AU Orthodontists Sydney is one of the few clinical practices in Sydney who is licensed to provide this orthodontic advancement.

Advantages of using Invisalign System:

All orthodontic treatments are considered effective in straightening crooked and overcrowded teeth; however, Invisalign in Sydney has some benefits that are unique from any other orthodontic treatment available to the market.

  • It is removable: Unlike traditional braces that are fixed to your teeth, Invisalign aligners are like dental trays used for teeth whitening that you should wear 20-22 hours a day, giving your 2-4 hours to eat, drink, and clean your teeth freely.
  • It is discreet: Invisalign aligners are made of smooth clear specialized plastic tightly fitted to your teeth, making it almost unnoticeable for people to see.
  • It is more pain-free: As metal fixtures from traditional braces scratch or cut the insides of your mouth, Invisalign aligners are made of a smooth plastic material that would not irritate any part of your mouth.
  • It is hygienic: Since it is removable, brushing and flossing your teeth is hassle-free!

Our dentists at AU Orthodontists Sydney underwent a special training and are all certified to provide Invisalign in Sydney as an orthodontic treatment option. Contact us now to learn more about Invisalign System and know if it best suits your dental needs!

Orthodontic retainers

After undergoing an orthodontic procedure, use of orthodontic retainers is needed to maintain the results that have been achieved by your preferred orthodontic procedure. AU Orthodontists Sydney always acknowledges that wearing retainers post-procedure is as important as the orthodontic procedure itself because, without it, the correction your orthodontic treatment made will not be maintained and will be for nothing.

This dental appliance is either made of plastic and metal materials (depending on the type) that support and hold the teeth to its new position after wearing braces or any orthodontic treatment. The type of retainer may be fixed or removable based on the severity of the dental problem that was fixed by a previous orthodontic procedure.

Types of retainers:

  • A fixed retainer is a type of retainer that is made with a thin stainless wire positioned behind the teeth (like lingual braces). It may be a bit difficult to maintain as it may be a good hiding place of food particles causing plaque, but it may steer you away from forgetting to wear retainers as they are already bonded to your teeth.
  • A removable retainer, on the other hand, has a wire positioned in front of the teeth secured by an acrylic or plastic base to maintain your straightened teeth. Use of this type of retainer depends on your orthodontic situation and dentist’s recommendation; some orthodontists may opt for you to wear it all day, removing it when eating, brushing your teeth, or playing sports, while other dentists may ask you to just wear it every night.
TMJ Appliance

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD or TMD) is a painful condition that happens when the joints connecting the jawbone to the skull becomes inflamed or stretched the wrong way. This problem is sometimes hard to notice, and will only manifest in relation to other problems concerning your teeth or oral cavity.

It may be due to a lot of factors and are associated with a lot of other dental or medical conditions. The confusion in diagnosing this condition correctly is because the signs and symptoms it show are almost similar to other medical problems. To know more about TMJD and what orthodontic procedure can help alleviate the pain, contact AU Orthodontist Sydney and inquire about the TMJ splint or appliance.

Some symptoms associated with TMJD may include experiencing a ‘lockjaw’, or your jaws getting stuck when you open your mouth, hearing a clicking sound when you open/close your mouth, and swelling, tenderness, and/or pain on the face and jaw area. These symptoms may be addressed symptomatically; they may go away without any dental or medical attention, or some dentists turn to TMJ appliances to help prevent them from recurring.

A TMJ appliance in Sydney is a splint that looks like a bite plate made of plastic, acrylic resin, or soft prefabricated material. It is also called a bite guard that you wear to fit over your upper and lower teeth. AU Orthodontists Sydney uses a TMJ splint or appliance for its patients to maintain the position of the teeth and prevent a dental disorder called bruxism, or teeth grinding, which can worsen TMJD. It is also designed to lessen the pressure on the jaw joints and bones as well as allowing the jaw muscles to relax. These appliances may be worn all day, and/or while sleeping, depending on your AU Orthodontists Sydney specialist’s recommendation.
